the earliest known version of the Museum of Entitlement. This is the heart of the Eagle, itself only a familiar symbol that exists as a vehicle for the lesson plan of your life!
The Eagle of Entitlement was supposed to make a magnificent spectacle of itself at Burning Man in 2026.
Months of work had gone into preparing its arrival: gathering materials, finding components, developing its presentation, and giving physical form to a creature with extensive opinions about civilization and an exceptionally favorable assessment of its own significance.
Its departure was overtaken by what I regard as a deliberate legal ambush. The conflict arose entirely outside Burning Man and intensified at precisely the point when the project needed to leave. An attempted resolution became another source of pressure and uncertainty. The Eagle remained caught in the consequences until its opportunity to appear had passed.
For a work about entitlement, this was a rather brutal encounter with the subject.
The Eagle was conceived to reflect and deflect—to examine power, spectacle, history, and the extraordinary explanations people construct for getting their own way. It would deliver its findings with appropriate grandeur, selective comprehension, and the conviction that house music remained capable of achieving world peace.
Then came the practical demonstration of what happens when someone else’s purposes take precedence over everything you are trying to create.
The forces of evil can be remarkably small in their ambitions. There is a particular ugliness in applying pressure when someone is about to step beyond your reach—in making their departure contingent on surviving one more confrontation, one more demand, one more apparent resolution that fails to release them.
The damage extends into whatever they were trying to bring into the world. The work, the people waiting for it, the possibility of something extraordinary—all become acceptable casualties.
The Eagle had intended to examine that presumption from the relative comfort of being a sculpture.
Attempts to bring the installation to Black Rock City continued into event week. Even a brief appearance would have given the work a chance to become what it was meant to be: assembled, illuminated, and encountered by people who could decide for themselves what to make of it.
Instead, the pieces went into storage.
To everyone who helped, contributed, encouraged the project, or looked forward to finding it on the playa: thank you. The Eagle’s absence does not diminish what you helped bring into being. Your generosity remains part of the work.
I am deeply grateful to the Artery, Burning Man’s wonderful Art Department, and the Burning Man organization for their understanding and support. Their kindness meant an enormous amount throughout this experience. Amid the entanglements elsewhere, that encouragement helped preserve the possibility of continuing.
The work now turns toward 2027, carrying a possibility that was never in the original plans: that an Eagle built to embody entitlement might emerge from all this with the beginnings of enlightenment. What that does to a creature of such unquestionable importance remains to be seen.
Until 2027 Friends...
